Join us in celebrating our "Be in a League of Your Own" attendance challenge! We began our spring attendance challenge this week with classrooms competing against each other to hit it out of the park . We announced our first week winners and their classroom team moved to first base if they had the highest attendance for the week. One team, Mrs. Stevenson's class hit a double and moved to second base with the highest attendance percentage this week! Each Monday classroom teachers will nominate an "Attendance Legend" who demonstrates on time arrival and a high weekly attendance rate. 'Attendance Legends" will be recognized on the announcements and their picture will be posted on the Wall of Legends.

Students are greeted each morning to daily baseball and softball quotes, stories of successful sports icons, and baseball themed songs on the morning announcements! "Take me out to the ball game!"

JCS Families,

Jefferson County Schools will operate on a modified Non-Traditional Instruction Day (NTID) on Monday, March 16. All evening activities are canceled.

This decision was made after monitoring the weather throughout the weekend and consulting with the National Weather Service Charleston, WV, office this evening. Forecasted severe storms, including high winds up to 80 mph, heavy rain, and the potential for tornadoes, are creating too much uncertainty to plan for either an early or standard dismissal tomorrow afternoon. Keeping students at home helps us avoid putting them or our staff in harm's way.

What This Means for Your Student:

- Students will not report to school tomorrow and will complete their learning from home.
- K–5 students will find assignments and information posted in Rooms, as we did not send devices home for Canvas access.
- 6–12 students should follow the normal NTID process and connect with their teachers through their usual platforms.
- Teachers and staff will be available to support students from 9:15 am – 12:00 pm.

All LSIC meetings scheduled for tomorrow are cancelled and will be rescheduled. Math Field Day has been postponed to Wednesday, March 18.

Thank you for your understanding and partnership as we work to keep everyone safe.

WVU Medical School Students Host Healthy Eating Demonstration
for Driswood Elementary School 5th graders

[Shenanodoah Junction, WV] — [12-18-25] — Future doctors are stepping out of the classroom and into the kitchen to inspire healthy habits among the youngest learners. Medical students from West Virginia University Medical School MedCHEFS (Medical Curriculum on Health, Nutrition, and Exercise Science) partnered with Driswood Elementary School to present an interactive healthy snack demonstration for elementary students, showing that nutritious eating can be fun, simple, and delicious.

The event, held in the school’s Outdoor Learning Center, featured hands-on activities where students learned about balanced meals, the health benefits of eating the rainbow of colors when choosing fruits and vegetables, and easy ways to prepare healthy snacks. Medical students guided 5th grade students through age-appropriate demonstrations, emphasizing how food choices impact overall health and well-being. The med students and faculty made multi-color fruit kebabs and a home-made ranch. Students were excited to use the ranch to taste the tomatoes and radishes they had grown in their new school greenhouse.

The program aligns with the school’s commitment to promoting wellness and complements classroom lessons on nutrition and healthy lifestyles. Students left the event with recipe cards, tasting samples, and a renewed excitement for healthy eating. For more information about the Med Chefs initiative led by Dr. Kathryn McQueen and Dr. Rosemarie Cannarella Lorenzetti who run the 4 year Culinary and Lifestyle Medicine Track.

DRISWOOD ELEMENTARY CELEBRATES UNITY! This is the 6th year Driswood Elementary has been joining schools nationwide to observe PACER.org’s bullying prevention day called Unity Day. Students were excited to wear orange again to celebrate the theme of kindness, acceptance, and inclusion on October 15, 2025 with special activities and a kindness assembly hosted by the National Humane Education Society affiliated with Briggs Animal Adoption Center. They learned ways to safely approach an animal and to understand nonverbal language from animals to show them more kindness, just as we would to other students. Intermediate and primary level classes were also matched schoolwide, and given the opportunity to do a paired reading with reading Unity themed books displayed in the library. Students will continue to learn about inclusion, acceptance, and kindness as well as ways to manage situations involving bullying in monthly counseling lessons with their school counselor, Mrs. McDonald as well as teacher lead activities.
