During the second quarter of the school year, DES received a $300 grant from Friends of Music to support its music program through the purchase of an alto xylophone and several new music stands.
The new equipment is being used by general music students and members of the fifth-grade band, helping expand hands-on learning opportunities in the classroom. Music teacher Angela Wyatt shared that the additional instruments make a meaningful difference for her students.
“My students absolutely love playing instruments in music class,” Wyatt said. “Having more instruments available allows more students to be actively involved at the same time, rather than waiting for a turn. It creates a more engaging and collaborative learning experience.”
Friends of Music awards grants each year to support music education in Jefferson County schools. The program helps provide instruments and music supplies that may fall outside of regular school budgets and is funded in part through the support of community partners.
Founded in 1999, Friends of Music is a Shepherdstown-based nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting musical excellence in local schools.
